"FINDING MY WAY"

ACRYLIC & PASTEL ON CANVAS - 1m x 1m

A PIECE INSPIRED BY THE UPCOMING INDIGENOUS BOOK COLLECTION WRITTEN BY JOSEPH BOLTON, AND ILLUSTRATED BY NATASHA PELLEY-SMITH

INTRODUCTION

Old Grandmother’s Tree is one of a collection of stories written by
Joseph Bolton, an author of Quebec Native American background. He has
been working for some time on these stories in collaboration with
Natasha Pelley-Smith, Canadian muralist, illustrator and canvas artist.
Her Ojibwe/Cree mix of her mother’s side has always played a role in her
outlook on life including her spiritual practices, interaction with
nature and healing abilities through energy work. When
Joseph was in search of an artist to take on this enormous project to
complete in its approximation of 400 images, he found that Natasha was
the perfect fit, with both of their indigenous backgrounds working
together to bring the essence of the story alive.

The first story, in which the painting "Finding My Way" is based upon, takes place in
the 1800s. The main character goes through life changes of marriage,
while spirit trickster animals and past ancestors help her on
her journey.

Natasha was so excited to see the call for submissions of Ohpinamake
2023, that she immediately knew she had to apply, to bring awareness not
only to her native American culture, but other indigenous tribes alike across North
America. In the canvas painting, “Finding my way” , she
depicts the spirit/trickster animals that are introduced in the first
short folktale “Old Grandmother’s tree”, and the main character’s
powerful connection to nature, family and community. Natasha puts
herself in the main character’s shoes, connecting to her own life
experiences that help bring Joseph’s book into its full fruitation.

THE GIRL IN THE PAINTING

It is a day of feasting and celebration. Today a young widow of the Weskarani band of the Algonquin people, born as Miteouamigoukoue but baptized as Marie Madeline, is marrying French soldier and interpreter Pierre Couc. Pierre offers his new wife a gray shawl imported from France as a wedding gift while Marie Madeline Miteouamigoukoue offers her new husband a wooden deer that she has carved in honour of their marriage. Two families and two cultures celebrate together long into the night with feasting, storytelling, dancing, and athletic matches."

ILLUSTRATIVE INTRODUCTION OF EACH GENERATION

IN JOSEPH BOLTON'S UPCOMING BOOK. 2024.

Marie Madeline in the forest

Marie Madeline is depicted in the illustration to the left as the top descendant in the cain of ancestors. She passes down the "shall" that she receives as a wedding gift, which later becomes a magical shall (magic from the northern lights and ancestors in the sky) that helps future generations to come in their life adventures. She is an important character that starts the continuation of the rest of the stories throughout the novel. She is a symbol of strength and perseverance that the painting also depicts.

THE TRICKSTER ANIMALS

A short distance away that same night, the ancient trickster animals of the forest gather to admire the stars above.

Muin the Bear: The campfires of the sky burn especially bright this night.

Mikcheech the Turtle: As the oldest of us gathered here, I have seen many nights and there is something different about this one, but familiar. Come to think of it, I have seen nights like this one before. The last time I remember a night like this one

Azeban the Racoon: Look, everyone! I see a path coming down from one of the campfires in the night sky.

Puku'kowij the Moose: Does this mean that we are having a visitor? As the youngest one of us, I haven’t seen as many nights as you have, Uncle Mikcheech.

Mikcheech the Turtle: Yes, that must be it! Now I remember! We are having a visitor from one of the campfires in the sky.

Wiskijan the Raven: Very few people from the sky return to visit the Earth. It takes many prayers to create such magic.

Wowkwis the Fox: Then we must make ready to welcome him! "

THE ILLUSTRATIVE INTRODUCTION OF EACH CHARACTER

In this scene of Old Grandmother's Tree, the trickster animals are introduced for the first time. They have been around for centuries, as they are spirit animals that will always remain throughout the book series that takes place during different time periods. They are symbol of light, fun, guidance and safety, always portrayed in a quirky setting to bring an uplifting feeling throughout the stories. Each trickster animal wears a talisman that symbolizes their difference among regular animals.

THE PAINTING IN ACTION HERE

There are 8 stories that are weaved together within timelines and stories, intricately bringing together each character in a unique unfolding way. This cover was the first image ever created for the author, Joseph Bolton, and he loved the ambience right away! The illustrations have progressively gotten more and more detailed to highlight the amazing adventures of each individual. The book was presented to the mayor of the author's city, and has been accepted to be presented in Indigenous celebrations on June 21, 2024, National Indigenous Peoples Day.
